Travel across canada- Montreal to Vancouver

Were a couple in the early 20's wanting to travel across Canada from Montreal to Vancouver starting the 29th of June.

We are curious to know if anyone has done such a trip. We would like to save as much money as possible because the budget we set for the trip is around $1200 for the both of us. Is that reasonable enough?

We would like to hitchhike or share a ride with people that are traveling, but we are not sure where and how we can find people doing similar trips with such a long destination. Is hitchhiking possible in such a trip in canada? has anyone done it before?
