Lake Mary, Florida (suburb of Orlando) relocation?

I have to spend 3 weeks near Orlando for business in the fall. I may potentially relocate there. I have a 50lb dog. I have heard awful stories about the area from alligator attacks on dogs, to bad storms and humidity. Is this the case? Any info on day to day living in the Orlando area is appreciated. Specifically
1. snakes, alligators, lizards, frogs, etc how frequent, where do they live? Are they out all year?
2. crime
3. weather
4. traffic
